Or you could reply by declaring that it’s unclear what I am trying to ask you. What do I mean by “meaning”? Do I mean to ask what the meaning of the word life is, or what the meaning of the meaning of the word life is? You can’t prioritize to determine whether you should answer it as life as a biological process or an experience. This is the example of the bad question that is, in essence, unanswerable. Now, if you were a professor asking this difficult question to a group of incoming MIT freshmen for them to answer in a single semester: “How would you effectively prioritize the biggest issues facing our planet, develop feasible scientific, social, and economic approaches to addressing them, keeping biodiversity in mind, and present it all in a convincing manner?” Their rhetorical question-response would be: “Isn’t that like asking how I would save the world?!” Not to mention that some of their faces would look like the picture on the left for 70% of the semester, and like the one on the right for the remaining 30%. heehee. ,                                           How can I be so sure, you ask? No worries, I enjoyed every minute of time-pressured-pondering-facial-contortion. ;D You see, Im part of a learning community open to freshmen called Terrascope. As part of being in Terrascope, you take Solving Complex Problems (12.000) in the fall, which is, designed to provide students the opportunity to work as part of a team to propose solutions to a complex problem that requires an interdisciplinary approach. This falls class, Mission 2015, answered the difficult question above, and each years class has the tasks of researching a major global issue, eventually proposing a multi-faceted solution in front of a panel of experts, and compiling a website to explain the problem and solution. Previous years topics range from the collapse of the global fisheries, to access to clean fresh water, to stemming the rise of greenhouse gases, to feeding nine billion people. The class is entirely self-taught, as students decide when to meet, what course of action to take, etc. Of course, there were Undergraduate Teaching Fellows (UTFs)* and mentors available to help us out when the going got rough and we asked for help on how to put everything together (they also helped by cooking food for our meetings [because the terrascope room has a kitchen] and give us scrumptious chocolate-covered coffee beans to keep us awake, pictured to the right). Being in Mission 2015 really made me think about the world as a complex system, and it helps me think about problems in general in a systematic and efficient fashion. With the right mindset, questions are not unphanthomabletheyre either just really difficult or simply bad. Personal development and success are often, if not usually, tied up with a successful and satisfying career or careers. This means that career development is a key element to a self improvement program, whether for an adult or young student; even for a mature student. Do you agree or disagree? Why?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Career development is a key, if not central part of every individual’s growth. It is an aspect of humanity which should necessarily follow and apply where ‘growth’ and ‘development’ of a person is concerned. I believe it holds great significance to an individual not only because it defines the individual’s identity in terms of where he or she stands in society, but because it will also influence and perhaps dictate an individual’s personal or private life to the detriment or development of it. Career development should then be pursued if one is expected to grow holistically and lead a satisfying life. Is it important to have particular strengths and skills in a particular career or is destiny more important?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Both are important in every aspect of life, but more so in every career. Having particular strengths and skills and working hard in honing them is important in school, the workplace, and the rest of society. Opportunities and fortunate turn of events which work to our advantage are also important, and should be acted upon, but jumping in an endeavor without the proper skills and aforementioned strengths can only bring people so far, or not bring them anywhere at all. Strength and skills, as well as the instance of good fortune holds great significance in every career, and contribute to its development. The American Dream as it Relates to Death of a Salesman The theme of the American Dream is extremely prevalent in Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman. It is so prevalent that there are literally hundreds of different to ways to analyze how the theme is used in the play. One interesting perspective is that the different characters in the play represent different versions of the American Dream. Biff represents the 19th century version of the American Dream, Happy represents the 20th century version, and Willy represents a combination of the two, and is torn between them.
